We Hosted a Manga Workshop and Career Talk for American High School Students!

Recently, MANGA DOJO Tokyo had the pleasure of hosting a manga workshop and career talk for two groups of American high school students participating in a summer study program in Japan.

The students came from across the United States and all shared a passion for art and creativity. Many of them aspire to become illustrators, comic artists, or other creative professionals in the future.

Learning from a Professional Manga Artist

In addition to drawing manga, the students attended a special career talk by one of our professional manga artists.

The session covered topics such as:

• How to become a professional manga artist
• The journey from debut to a professional career
• What it’s like to work in the manga industry
• Advice for students who dream of working in creative fields

The students were highly engaged and asked thoughtful questions about pursuing a career in art and manga.

Communicating Through Manga

During the workshop, students created their own original manga while interacting with one another through their artwork.

Instead of simply drawing characters, they used manga to express their experiences and memories of Japan. Sharing their stories through comics created a fun and meaningful way for students to connect with each other.

It was wonderful to see how manga became a universal language that encouraged creativity, communication, and cultural exchange.

Creating a Lasting Memory of Japan

One of the unique aspects of our workshop is that participants don’t just take home souvenirs—they take home a manga they created themselves.

By turning their experiences in Japan into a comic, students leave with a personal and memorable record of their learning journey.
